effera®'s Role in Microbiome, Barrier & Gut Resilience

Abstract

This resource describes the proposed mechanisms by which effera® human lactoferrin, produced through precision fermentation, supports gastrointestinal health. It covers three areas: microbiome modulation (selective promotion of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while limiting pathogenic overgrowth, via iron-binding, glycans, and bioactive peptides), gut barrier integrity (epithelial cell growth, tight-junction protein upregulation including claudin-1, occludin, and ZO-1, and reduced permeability), and gut immune/inflammatory balance (reduction of oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines via iron binding and NF-κB/PPAR pathway modulation). It references an internal human gut simulation study reporting increased SCFA production, improved transepithelial electrical resistance, and reduced CXCL-10 at doses as low as 50-100 mg/day, and cites a randomized trial showing effera® maintained overall microbiome diversity while enriching SCFA-producing genera. A claims-substantiation table ties specific gut-health claims to studies at 100 mg, 200 mg, and 340 mg doses, closing with a 31-item reference list of external lactoferrin research.
